Islamabad: As per announcement of Power Division on Tuesday, country’s hydel power generation has considerably increased to 5000 Megawatts from earlier 1800 Megawatts. The improved generation from hydel sources has eased the overall power shortfall, which was previously around 6,500 MW. The shortfall in hydel power was primarily due to 48% decline in water releases as provinces had not been asking for their due share of water from dams due to crop harvesting season, informed Minister of Power Awais Leghari while talking to an international news agency.
Currently Pakistan’s total Hydel Power generation Capacity is 9500 Mega Watt. According to Wapda, there are 8 under construction Hydel Power projects and work kept progressing at a satisfactory pace on these projects Diamer Basha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu hydel power project and Tarbela 5th Extension Project. After Completion of these projects, Pakistan’s total hydel power generation capacity will increase to 20,000 Megawatts.
